Recipe: Homemade hamburger helper

Love hamburger helper but can't take the onslaught of sodium on your internal organs? Well have I got an easy-to-make recipe for you.

For the guy and I, H and H (that's what we call the popular dinner in a box) is a guilty, and unhealthy pleasure. But it's oh-so-easy and oh-so-cheesy, so I find it difficult to say no when he requests it every other month.

That is, until I found this recipe in a Taste of Home magazine for a cheeseburger casserole:

  • 1 lb of ground beef (we used ground turkey because it's way healthier and tastes even better)
  • 1 can of cheddar cheese soup
  • 1 can of cream of mushroom soup
  • bag of frozen french fries
To make: Cook ground beef and drain fat. Add both cans of soup to meat and mix. Then add meat mixture to baking dish and cover with frozen french fries. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-55 minutes or until french fries are golden brown.

That's it! And I promise it tastes just like hamburger helper. You still have some sodium, but if you buy low-sodium soups that will help. Enjoy!
