Western Mass. Boys Scores

Since we get a handful of phone calls a night from folks needing scores, we're going to throw them up on our blog as soon as we get them. That way, if you're near a computer, you can just hop over here to see what we know.

So far the Division II boys are in, with Monument coming back from 18 down in a 68-64 win over Easthampton. The Spartans now face top-seeded Taconic. In the Wahconah-South Hadley game, the Warriors fell 81-77.

WRHS-THS

Looks like we're still on for tonight. Enjoy the game everyone.

Wahconah-Taconic

Just got off the phone with the folks in the main office at Wahconah Regional, and they said that as far as they know, the game between the Warriors and Taconic boys' basketball teams will go off as scheduled tonight. The girls' game, scheduled for last night, was postponed due to a leaky skylight. Check back here once more before you head out, and we'll give you the official word. Hopefully we'll get to enjoy some competitive basketball, but we wouldn't want you wasting your time driving out to Dalton if the game was postponed.

Last thoughts on the game

My college-age daughter said to me "I'm speechless" when I called her late in the fourth quarter. I think Ali speaks for all of Patriot Nation.
It is still a little hard to fathom that the perfect season ended the way it did.
But if you watched the post-game programming, you had to be disappointed in Bill Belichick and his extremely terse answers to questions. It seemed like he was a pretty poor sport.
There is a little bit of Kismet in the Giants winning this year. Last year's champion was the Colts, and as was pointed out numerous times this week, the Colts and Giants NFL championship game in 1958 was the game that defined the modern NFL.
And for the second time in three years, one of the old original families won a Super Bowl. The Rooneys got it with the Steelers two years ago, and the Maras won tonight.
By the way, director of player personnel Chris Mara is married to Kathleen Rooney -- a Steeler/Giant merger.
Thanks for all the fun NFL, see you in September.

Patriots lose

What does a Patriots fan say or do? I can't imagine how they feel going 18-0 and falling one game short of history. I thought Jimmy Johnson had an interesting take on the Patriots, as how his U of Miami team went undefeated but lost to Penn State in the national title game. Johnson said he was devastated, but the Hurricanes came back the next year and won the national title.
Don't know if the Patriots will win the Super Bowl next year, but with a No. 7 pick in the upcoming draft, things do look bright.

can eli be peyton??

The Patriots touchdown drive showed us all that Tom Brady, boot or no boot, is still Tom Brady. Can Eli Manning be Peyton?? And can David Tyree make a better catch than the one he just made with 1:05 left in the fourth quarter?? Keep tuned

quick commerical update

At the two minute warning, I got a big smile out of Ben Roethlisberger's trying to sing. Unlike the commercial, I didn't like that song the original way.

right down to the wire

Here we go. Just under seven minutes to play and the Patriot offense has stunk all night -- the Giant defense has been great. What Giant fan out there thinks Brady is going to drive the Patriots down for the go-ahead touchdown??

How about this game

Sorry some of the blog entries were a little slow in coming -- technical difficulties.
If you took the under in the Super Bowl, you are certainly sitting pretty right now. This game has not played out the way anybody thought it would. Even if the Giants win, nobody would have predicted that both teams would have scored 10 points combined by the end of three quarters.
Should make for a great fourth quarter.
How about that?? Charlie Brown finally wins one!!

Irony, thy name is Bill Belichick

For Patriot haters, how about Belichick challenging and getting a penalty for too many men on the field. Ironic that a guy who is considered a cheater for Spygate (I don't, by the way) challenges a play to give a penalty to the Giants.

Tom Petty

Did you enjoy Tom Petty? I sure did.
Called my teenager who is a Patriots fan, and he said he wasn't worried. So neither should you.
Pats get the kickoff to start the third quarter, and that first drive of the quarter will be key for the Pats. If the Giants can't stop N.E. on that drive, it could be a long second half.

Surprised? So am I!

This was quite a surprise. Maybe some of us underrated the Giants by a whole bunch. Giants defense has been hitting Brady often, and experts say that's the main way to beat them. Now, if New York could get some more points, it could be a very exciting second half.
Any thoughts?

Hard hitting game

The first quarter has been very hard hitting, and things have not slowed down in Quarter 2. Twice the Giants have moved the ball well, but came up with only three points. Not good. Fortunately for the Giants, their defense has been almost as good as New England's.
Smiled at the Napoleon commercial, understanding that my son has to write a paper on the little French emperor for school.

first drive

Nice hoodie Bill. How much will it cost?
Giants could be in big trouble. You've got to score touchdowns when you get the chance against the Patriots, and the G-Men settled for a field goal. Especially a 10-minute drive.
Commercial grades: Audi gets an A, any commercial that can cite "The Godfather" gets a great grade. The Pepsi commercial gets a B, thanks to Chris Kattan.

Pride and prejudice

By the way, if anybody watched the pregame show, let me know what you thought. I watched about five minutes of the entire four hours.

It's almost Super Bowl time

Howard Herman blogging in for the night. I'll be watching the game along with you, and will be handing out opinons.
Almost kickoff time. Interesting that Jordin Sparks sang the national anthem. Her father Phillippi {sp?) is a former Giants defensive back.

Pregame predictions

With a little more than an hour to go before Super Bowl XLII starts, and Howard Herman begins his in-game blog, the Eagle newsroom staffers have weighed in. Here's who we think takes home the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Matthew Sprague, Eagle sports editor: Patriots 41, Giants 24. New England has been provided with every bit of motivation it needs to hoist another Lombardi Trophy. The Patriots end this one early.

Howard Herman: Patriots 41, Giants 17.

Brian Sullivan: Patriots 38, Giants 17. No group of 40 men and a coaching staff could get close to something this unbelievable and let it slip through their fingers.

Alicia Bunt: Giants 29, Patriots 26. Just guessing.

(Laura Marshall has abstained from voting.)

Judy Storie: Patriots 35, Giants 24. Right now, I think they're the better team.

Well, that's what we think. How about you?
