There really is more to life than television. Okay, not much, but there is. Around the holidays, we start looking more closely at family and friends and memories of places past. We can't help it -- every single commercial that airs after Halloween has been designed to make us nostalgic. Or, at the very least, guilty for not feeling more nostalgic.

I had to work on Thanksgiving, one of the few downsides to being a copy editor at a daily newspaper, but that doesn't mean I didn't fall victim to holiday sentiment. I got to have leftovers -- Tofurkey and stuffing and veggies and, of course, pies. And the end-of-autumn weather inspired me to pick up a favorite old book: The Catcher in the Rye.

Good thing, too, because my shows weren't on last night. So instead of finding out what's going to happen with Jim and Pam and what's-her-name on "The Office," or what insane antics Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey are going to try next on "30 Rock," I started following good old Holden Caulfield on his journey home from Pency Prep. I'd forgotten how much I love this book; Holden's insights are accurate and hilarious at the same time. And he got me through Thanksgiving.

But listen up, NBC: The holiday might have made me warm and fuzzy enough to forgive you for airing Deal or No Deal instead of my shows, but remember -- Thanksgiving only comes once a year.
