April 8, 2007 Spring raking

april-8-sw-view.jpg
April 8, 2007 view from the solar south. This area is going to change drastically as I (we:) redesign the patio into a terrace area. The bush is going away so the rock (to the right in the photo) can be exposed. All the Day Lilies, Tall Yellow Daisies and the rose bush will have to be removed and transplanted. Stay tuned…

With the paths I set out last summer as a guide I raked the berms (with help:) and left the piles snaking along defining the paths. The idea is that once the raked areas green I will rake the dead stuff onto the paths to keep down the growth and define the path. Crazy huh! Stay tuned...

West berm - BEFORE. View to the south out through the woods to the field. Maybe this year I'll get to clearing the woods enough to see this view in the summer too.

The Spring Celebration

spring-cele.jpg

Through the centuries we have rejoiced each spring.
Rejoiced that life would be constant.
Rejoiced that death in nature will be reborn.
Rejoiced that new growth confirmed that new life was being born.

Or have we rejoiced because deep in our nature we know how delicate the balance of the changing cycle of life is. Is there somewhere in our collective memory, in our very makeup the realization of how easily the balance could tip. How easily nature and now humanity could tip that balance into an unstable cycle that would destroy this life as we know it.

Is it for this reason that we rejoice in this season?

Not because life is constant or was reborn or has been created brand new.

Maybe we should rejoice because for another year the cycle has remained unbroken in spite of all the odds in nature and all the years and all the things that humanity has inflicted on one another and on our planet.

Even now as, we all know, the cycle is altering, there is still time to rejoice.

Maybe even time to do something.

It is coming... April 5, 2007

But not as fast as I would like.

This morning *we* woke to ice and a dusting of snow.
