July 18, 2007: Piles and piles of fill... start...

We staked it out. Note the orange handle is about how high the fill has to be to be level with the house. You can also just make out the cord that we had a string level on as a guide to how high we had to come up. The picture really cannot give you the pitch. Let's just say that we will need a LOT of fill. The yellow sign says, DUMP FILL HERE.

Here's the view from inside with the old gravel covering. It's so tiny. We're really EXCITED and we are going to make a it really big terrace. Later (I'm writing this July 31st), TIRED (today) when the terrace isn't done yet we will realize that we got carried away. But it is going to be GREAT!

The fill level. (sorry no shots of the dump truck or the tractor)

From the south east side you can get a little feel for the depth of the fill. This is the side that will get a stone wall. I want to keep the rock (see the gray area to the right coming out of the ground) free and have some plants around it. It was covered all theese years with a wild rose bush and a bush of some sort. I trimmed the rose back. The bush is gone.

From the west side. The entry path will wrap up onto the terrace from here.

Other things were going on in the yard too:

April 19 - Early July 2007: A great deal of catch up is in order...

Maybe you have noticed the title change on this blog. From "my" to "our"? The "our" is the addition to a wonderful woman to the yard and my life. Joey Sage Jablonski and I met last September and since then the "our" is what life has been about. Picnics, parties, travel, music, art and sharing more and more. She will be adding her own words and photos to this blog, about "our" yard, too.

Joey did do some planting (she loves tomatoes).

Opening up so the tractor and truck can get in.

For what you ask?

A terrace.

I've always wanted to have a terrace and since going to Sicily in February I 'really' wanted one. It would expand our living space outside, give Joey an outdoor working space and a place to have, 'those kind of parties'.

So Joey got Joe our neighbor to come over to help with the tractor stuff.

Joey was project manager on this day...

...better that I was at work and didn't have to watch this.

No more 'Yellow Gauntlet'.

We tried to save as many Day Lilies as we could. Not to easy when you are using a bucket-loader to scoop them up.

Flattened. But not level with the house. It is really amazing how high the house is compared to the backyard.

Ready for the fill.

The plan is to build an organic shaped terrace with pergola. Deciding what to use to cover the surface has been an experience. I would have just covered the fill with 1/2 inch washed gravel. Joey introduced Stone Dust into the mix to keep down the weeds... then we'll add a flagstone area for the tables and chairs (so they won't sink in to the gravel). Much better in the long run. I can still transition the gravel around the edges with the paths. That makes me happy.

The fill.
