April 25, 2009: Planting and digging more beds

The plan...
After reviewing all the information about companion planting and knowing that we must rotate our veggies, last year's tomato leaf will now have cukes and beans. The next leaf will be tomatoes and basil (alot of both), to the right of the cold frame will be zucchini and nasturtium for pest control. The cold frame has 3 different lettuces and to the right of it is arugula and spinach with radishes. The new leaf will be parsnips and pepper plants. Marigolds will be planted everywhere in and around the beds, also for pest control.

IMG_3812.jpg

The action...

IMG_3799.jpg
Compost manure from Billy. Nice stuff!

IMG_3813.jpg

IMG_3814.jpg

IMG_3815.jpg

Joey bought some organic compost when we didn't know if when we were going to get a delivery. We really wanted to get the lettuce started.

IMG_3816.jpg

IMG_3817.jpg

IMG_3818.jpg

IMG_3819.jpg

IMG_3820.jpg

IMG_3821.jpg

IMG_3822.jpg

The arugula is planted along the edge and the radishes will go in the middle.

IMG_3823.jpg

We were dripping with sweat. Good hard work out in the sunshine.

IMG_3825.jpg

IMG_3827.jpg

Regular and Pellet style lettuce seeds. The pellet seeds are seeds that are encased in an inert substance that gives them more size. They can be easily planted one inch apart therefore eliminating the need for thinning. Thinning always seems so wasteful that we have a hard time doing it. They are coming up beautifully so we would definitely recommend them.

IMG_3830.jpg

IMG_3831.jpg

The darker middle is planted with parsnips and pepper plants will go around the edge. They are good companions.

IMG_3832.jpg

The lighter colored rows to the right are not planted yet. We are planning to wait 3 weeks, plant a few more rows, then wait another 3 weeks and plant some more. That way we'll have lettuce throughout the summer. But I must say it's hard to leave all those beautiful rows unplanted today.

IMG_3833.jpg

Preparing the original two leaf beds. Bernie is turning over one of the beds and Joey is pulling the weeds by hand out the other one. Both will have manure added.

IMG_3834.jpg

IMG_3835.jpg

IMG_3836.jpg

Next to finish turning the main leaf beds...

Note: In seven days the plantings shown here began to sprout (May 2, 2009).

April 25, 2009: Planning the front yard squash and pumpkin beds

The bed for squash will be in the "V" of the paths...

IMG_3802.jpg

...and the pumpkin patch will be here just north of the the east front berm...

IMG_3803.jpg

IMG_3804.jpg

...watch what happens.

April 25, 2009: Beach Plum Flowering

What a difference from morning to evening...

IMG_3801.jpg

IMG_3837.jpg

and warm weather.

April 25, 2009: Wren's Bottle, or maybe not...

This morning we saw a Bluebird trying to fit into the opening of the Wren's Bottle. So Joey took the one from in the woods with a wider opening and brought it up to the edge of the yard...

IMG_3767.jpg

IMG_3768.jpg

IMG_3769.jpg

IMG_3770.jpg

Maybe the Blue Bird will come back and try again.

April 25, 2009: Frog

Well, we have a new addition to the yard family...

IMG_3771.jpg

IMG_3772.jpg

IMG_3773.jpg

IMG_3774.jpg

I do want to do something with this drainage ditch. But now I have a frog living in it to think about...

April 23, 2009

April 19, 2009: Evening, as we send off the Solstice Tree

Thanks.

IMG_3736.jpg

IMG_3737.jpg

IMG_3738.jpg

IMG_3739.jpg

IMG_3740.jpg

IMG_3741.jpg

IMG_3743.jpg

Now that was a send off!

I want to go that way.

April 19, 2009: House with terrace view

On a beautiful Sunday in April.

IMG_3688.jpg

It's getting greener every day...

April 19, 2009: Fire Swirl (Frog Pond)

It'll drain...

IMG_3687.jpg

Someday...

"Ribbit."

April 19, 2009: Cutting back the Phragmites

The Phragmite reeds make a great base for my paths...

IMG_3720.jpg

IMG_3721.jpg

The Day Lilies that are growing in the Phragmite love it when I help them like this...

IMG_3722.jpg

Wait until you see them take off now!

April 19, 2009: Wren's Bottle

Joey makes these Wren's nest bottles. This one was up in a tree back in the woods and as you can see was occupied... looked pretty cozy.

Want to buy one? Call Joey at (860) 933-1101. I think they're $28 and they really work.

April 19, 2009: About the Cold Frame

Here's a tip for you, "Build your cold frame in the Autumn. Then you'll actually have a chance to use it in the Spring."

But Joey had a great idea. We'll just hold off putting the glass on until the Autumn and just use it as a planting box for the Summer.

IMG_3675.jpg

IMG_3676.jpg

Rocks for drainage.

IMG_3678.jpg

IMG_3679.jpg

Now to fill in around it and dig some new beds for planting. Joey moved all that old wood that was drying down to the Fire Swirl... (but that's another story)

IMG_3730.jpg

IMG_3731.jpg

IMG_3732.jpg

I took the sod out from where I was digging the bed and laid it in front to make a path up to the cold frame.

IMG_3733.jpg

IMG_3734.jpg

Now to get some manure and plant some lettuce in there...

IMG_3735.jpg

Half done.. Looks pretty good.

I think cucumbers and squash are going in here.

We'll put a wire fence up in front of the woodpile for the plants to climb up...

April 22, 2009

April 18, 2009: Where did all the sod and plants go?

They are going over to the west side of the yard and are snaking there way down the edge with the Day Lilies and Tall Daisies that went there last year.

IMG_3702.jpg

IMG_3706.jpg

IMG_3707.jpg

IMG_3708.jpg

IMG_3709.jpg

IMG_3695.jpg

We're going to have a cool edge of flowers soon...

April 18, 2009: Transplanting the Chives and a new leaf shaped bed

Joey at work taking the Chives, Tall Daisies and Day Lilies out of this old bed...

IMG_3681.jpg

IMG_3694.jpg

...that I'm going to turn into another leaf shaped garden bed.

IMG_3682.jpg

Joey working on the Chive circle...

IMG_3684.jpg

IMG_3685.jpg

IMG_3696.jpg

Not that kind of bed. Joey says "Hey! I was exhausted. I'd been working like a dog (not our dog)."

IMG_3697.jpg

IMG_3725.jpg

Double digging the bed.

IMG_3724.jpg

IMG_3726.jpg

This kind of bed.

April 18, 2009: Trimming the Tall Daisies back

Before they encroach more, it's time to dig these up and transplant them up near the Apple tree in the northeast corner of the yard...

IMG_3667.jpg
Before.

IMG_3689.jpg
After.

IMG_3690.jpg
Ready for transport...

IMG_3691.jpg
Up to the northeast corner... Needs raking...

IMG_3692.jpg
That's better.

IMG_3693.jpg
There are others up here as well and Day Lilies too.

They'll make a nice setting for when we picnic under the Apple Tree.

April 18, 2009: Taking down the Solstice Tree

Thank you beautiful tree...

IMG_3674.jpg

IMG_3686.jpg

Planning to send it off into it's new life...

(the chairs bow to her)

April 18, 2009: Misha relaxes

Joey and I strolled around the yard deciding where we were going to plant...

IMG_3670.jpg

...and Misha liked this place.

IMG_3671.jpg

IMG_3672.jpg

April 18, 2009: A day in the yard

A glorious day begins...

IMG_3666.jpg

...with breakfast on the terrace.

Building the Cold Frame

Remember how this began?
IMG_3594.jpg
Read Preparing the spot: [March 8, 2009]

IMG_3594.jpg
Ok, I guess first I have the fix the woodpile. Now that the frost is out of the ground the wood is tilting... and toppling...

IMG_3595.jpg
Staking out the frame...

IMG_3596.jpg
Digging it in so it will stay warmer in the winter... That's one of the sliders from Mom's old house in New Milford...

IMG_3597.jpg
Pretty deep so far...

IMG_3598.jpg
I'm going to use old wood that I have saved from various projects over the years...

IMG_3599.jpg
Ut oh, we have water...

IMG_3601.jpg
But I have some cement blocks saved from the old patio base... We'll have to fill the bottom with rocks to allow for good drainage... I used the blocks for a base and built the back wall frame...

IMG_3602.jpg
"...Yah, over here water is 1 foot down, yep, and over thar water is 250 feet down..." [Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House] That's the well head to the right and the wood pile between there and where I struck water...

IMG_3600.jpg
Wood for the front wall...

IMG_3604.jpg
Putting in the front wall... Wood (an old water bed frame) for the side walls...

IMG_3605.jpg
Now to join them together... if the door fits it will be a miracle...

IMG_3606.jpg
Man that was a back breaker... I had to pull the front and back wall frames out and nail the ends on... and then pull it back into the muck...

IMG_3607.jpg
Well... not too bad... And it's even level...

IMG_3608.jpg
Then I put a layer of 2x4s on... to tie it all in and strengthen the frame...

IMG_3609.jpg
That's it for today... Next I'll stain the wood.. Then I'll put the back wall and side wedges on using plywood... Then with Joey's help we'll get the door supports on and the door into place... When winter comes we'll have to plug the door edges with weather stripping...

Stay tuned...

Morning bath: Robin

Fire Swirl / Frog Pond, now bird bath...

Lilacs in bud

Yes, it is Spring! At least on the solar south side.

IMG_3526.jpg
My Dad gave me these Lilacs. He is with me here in the yard.

Pussy Willows

They are well in bloom on this misty, rainy April day.

IMG_3520.jpg
This tree was planted when we moved here, it is "Sarah's Pussy Willow Tree". It came from my cousin Frank Dan and Diane's yard back in the early eighties.

IMG_3521.jpg
It is in the southeast corner of yard near where the Hot Tub is now, photo is looking east with the inverted dormer peak of the house showing. Unfortunately it is having a hard time, the ground is very wet there. I have to take a cutting and root it and start another one. Actually two. One for our yard and one for Abby's yard.

IMG_3522.jpg
This is "Jamie's Pussy Willow Tree". This came from Frank and Diane too.

IMG_3524.jpg
This tree is up in the northwest corner, you can see the house to the east through the trees and bushes. It is doing well but I need to clear around it. I'll try and get to that. That corner is on my list this year. To extend the Day Lilies edge up to the car park. I can clear out under the tree and plant the Day Lilies under it too.

IMG_3592.jpg
Vase on the deck.

April 1, 2009: Daffodils in bloom

IMG_3516.jpg
On the southeast berm. Our Daffodils popped open sometime in the night...

There was one
That drooped and bobbed in the April breeze
On delicate strand
It's head a trumpet of life
But the morning rain held it down
So I picked it
Released it
So it would smile
all day long
Just for you
