The leaf gardens late May 2008

I'll let Joey tell you about how the leaf gardens came about...

The second leaf will be Joey's tomato patch.

A third leaf will tuck in at the top of these too (some day).

The Leaf Gardens - by Joey

Okay. I just assumed that vegetable gardens were rectangular. Rows of this and rows of that. When Bernie started digging a gaping hole in the yard shaped like a curved teardrop, I gently asked what he was doing. I said, "Aren't you going to dig a square?" "No," he said, "Why should it be square?" and I said, "because you need rows to walk on while you're weeding." "No," he said, "You can just reach in." So I pleaded, "How about just one row up the middle and you can curve it too?" And then I stomped up the middle to show him what I meant. There was a pause. "Coooool !!!" he said, "It looks like a LEAF!" And that is how our leaf gardens came to be. I love them!

The corner of the woodpile (the wood support was removed) was cleared for our spring salad garden.

This was in early May and things are coming up fine. Snow peas in the back and right side rows now on July 4th are as tall as the wood stack and we will have some tonight in our salad.
